The Remarkables

Guided Alpine Climbing close to Queenstown

An Iconic Summit

A classic day trip from Queenstown to one of New Zealand’s most recognisable mountain ranges. Single Cone (2,319 m), ice routes, multi-pitch rock, and the iconic Grand Traverse — all within an hour’s drive of town.

The Remarkables rise sharply above the southeastern shore of Lake Wakatipu, forming the jagged skyline that defines Queenstown. Named by surveyor Alexander Garvie in 1857 for their dramatic serrated ridgeline, the range — known as Kawarau to Ngāi Tahu — offers year-round alpine climbing just 30 minutes from town. The ski area access road gets you to 1,600 m, saving a full day’s walk and making single-day guided ascents practical for climbers of varying experience.

All Remarkables trips are led by IFMGA/NZMGA-qualified mountain guides. We tailor the objective to your ability, ambitions, and the conditions on the day — from a straightforward Single Cone ascent to the full Grand Traverse or technical mixed routes in winter.

What to Expect on the Day

A typical Remarkables day looks like this (times vary by objective and conditions):

  • 7:00–8:00 am — Meet in Queenstown. Your guide checks your gear, discusses the plan, and briefs you on the day.
  • 8:00–8:30 am — Drive to the Remarkables ski area car park (1,600 m). In winter the road may require chains.
  • 8:30–9:30 am — Hike to Lake Alta through alpine meadows (summer) or snowfields (winter). The approach takes 30–60 minutes.
  • 9:30 am – 3:00 pm — Climb. The specific route and timeline depends on the objective. Your guide manages the rope work, route-finding, and safety.
  • 3:00–4:00 pm — Descend to the car park.
  • 4:00–5:00 pm — Drive back to Queenstown.

Climbing Options

Winter Climbing

Winter transforms The Remarkables into a playground for alpine climbing, ice routes, and mixed terrain. The steep gullies and buttresses that flank Single Cone hold snow and ice well into spring, offering some of the best winter climbing close to Queenstown.

Classic winter objectives include :

  • South Gully of Single Cone — The standard winter route to the summit. A steep snow/ice gully leading directly to the top. Crampons, ice axe, and rope work required.

  • NE Spur of Single Cone — A more technical alternative to the South Gully, following the exposed ridgeline with mixed rock and ice.

  • Telecom Tower routes — Short, accessible ice and mixed climbs with quick approaches from the ski area.

  • Ice and mixed climbing above Lake Alta — Routes on the east buttress of Double Cone including Altered States (water ice) and the mixed routes on the DB Eh? Buttress.

  • Grand Traverse (winter) — The full traverse from Double Cone (2,307 m) to Single Cone (2,319 m) in winter conditions. Demanding — requires confident movement on snow, ice, and mixed terrain. Shorter daylight hours make efficiency essential.

Your guide will assess the conditions on the day and select the best objective for your experience level. All technical equipment — ropes, ice axes, crampons, and helmets — is provided.

Spring – Ski Mountaineering

As the days lengthen and the snowpack consolidates, the Grand Couloir on Single Cone becomes one of Queenstown’s best ski mountaineering objectives — a guided ascent followed by a steep ski or snowboard descent back to the ski area. Conditions depend on the season; we’ll assess stability and choose the right line on the day.

Spring & Summer – Rock Climbing & Traverses

When the snow melts, the Remarkables reveal excellent alpine rock on warm Otago schist. Summer is also the best season for the Grand Traverse if you prefer scrambling over mixed climbing.

  • Single Cone via NE Ridge — The standard summer ascent. Scrambling on good rock with some exposed sections. Suitable for fit climbers with basic mountaineering experience.

  • Lake Alta Slabs — Three-pitch multi-pitch rock climbs (NZ grade 15–19) with spectacular views of Lake Alta. Abseil descent. A great option if you want pure rock climbing rather than a summit trip.

  • DB Eh? Buttress — A classic 5-pitch route (NZ grade 17) on the east buttress of Double Cone. Sustained climbing on natural protection. You should be comfortable seconding grade 19–20 with a pack.

  • NE Buttress of Single Cone — Multi-pitch route with steep, exposed scrambling high above Lake Alta, finishing on the summit. More interesting and challenging than the standard NE Ridge route.

  • Grand Traverse (summer) — The full ridgeline from Double Cone to Single Cone. Immersive scrambling with jaw-dropping exposure — Queenstown sits nearly 2 km vertically below the west face. Typically 6–10 hours car-to-car. One of New Zealand’s premier single-day alpine routes.

Who is This For

No previous climbing experience is required.

For the standard Single Cone ascent you should be reasonably fit, comfortable on steep and uneven ground, and happy with exposure (drop-offs). Your NZMGA/ IFMGA-qualified mountain guide will provide all instruction and handle all technical rope work throughout the day.

For more advanced objectives — the Grand Traverse, winter ice routes, and multi-pitch rock climbing — some prior alpine or climbing experience is beneficial. Chat with us when you book and we will recommend the right objective for you.

Fitness: Expect 6 to 10 hours on your feet with approximately 700 m of elevation gain over mixed terrain. A good level of general fitness is required — if you can comfortably hike for a full day, you will be fine.
